Heavy, dense general cargo: machinery parts, tiles, metals, bagged goods. Fills by weight before it fills by volume.
Container Types.
Inside dimensions, door openings, weights and ISO codes of 18 box types. Figures are the carrier’s or lessor’s published fleet values, not ISO minimums: a box from another line can differ by a few centimetres or a few hundred kilograms.
Dry (general purpose)
Volume cargo of normal height: furniture, textiles, consumer goods. Twice the floor of a 20' for a similar payload.
12.032 m × 2.352 m × 2.395 m · 67.7 m³ · 28,800 kg payloadSpecs
Light, bulky cargo that runs out of height first. 30 cm more headroom than a 40' Dry; check over-height limits for inland legs.
12.032 m × 2.342 m × 2.700 m · 76.3 m³ · 28,650 kg payloadSpecs
Maximum volume per box. Not every road network accepts 45' units; check the inland leg before booking.
13.556 m × 2.352 m × 2.700 m · 86 m³ · 27,800 kg payloadSpecs
45' High Cube Pallet Wide
European short-sea and intermodal box: 2,500 mm outside, so two Euro pallets fit side by side. The lessor rates it for 33 Euro pallets.
13.555 m × 2.444 m × 2.695 m · 89.3 m³ · 29,550 kg payloadSpecs
- Wider than ISO 668 (2,438 mm); not every cell guide on deep-sea ships takes it.
Hardtop
20' Hardtop
ISO 22U6Heavy or tall pieces loaded by crane through a removable steel roof, or through the door with the header swung out.
5.895 m × 2.350 m × 2.384 m · 32.1 m³ · 29,650 kg payloadSpecs
- Height in the middle of the roof; at the sides it is lower (second figure).
40' Hardtop
ISO 42U6Long heavy items (steel, stone blocks, machinery) that need top loading and a rigid roof.
12.020 m × 2.342 m × 2.388 m · 67.2 m³ · 25,780 kg payloadSpecs
- Height in the middle of the roof; at the sides it is lower (second figure).
Open top
20' Open Top
ISO 22U1Over-height cargo and top loading by crane. The roof is a removable tarpaulin on roof bows.
5.895 m × 2.350 m × 2.380 m · 32.5 m³ · 30,050 kg payloadSpecs
- Height in the middle of the roof bows; at the sides it is lower (second figure).
40' Open Top
ISO 42U1Long over-height cargo: pipes, timber, machinery loaded from above.
12.030 m × 2.350 m × 2.377 m · 66.4 m³ · 26,630 kg payloadSpecs
- Height in the middle of the roof bows; at the sides it is lower (second figure).
40' High Cube Open Top
ISO 45U1Tall cargo that is just over standard open-top height, with the extra 30 cm of a high cube.
12.029 m × 2.352 m × 2.683 m · 74.9 m³ · 28,250 kg payloadSpecs
- Height in the middle of the roof bows; at the sides it is lower (second figure).
Flatrack
20' Flatrack
ISO 22P3Out-of-gauge and heavy-lift cargo: vehicles, generators, boats. Collapsible end walls, no side walls, no roof.
5.612 m × 2.227 m × 2.219 m · 31,260 kg payloadSpecs
- Length and width between the corner posts; height from floor to the top face of the end walls.
- Heavier-rated series in the same fleet reach 45,000 kg max gross.
40' High Cube Flatrack
ISO 45P3Long, heavy out-of-gauge cargo. Heavy loads must rest on the main girders; shorter heavy loads reduce the permitted payload.
11.652 m × 2.224 m × 2.248 m · 44,050 kg payloadSpecs
- Length and width between the corner posts; height from floor to the top face of the end walls.
- Heavier-rated series in the same fleet reach 60,000 kg max gross.
Platform
20' Platform
ISO 29P0A flatrack with its end walls folded flush: a bare deck for heavy, wide or very long pieces, often several platforms side by side as one base for break bulk.
6.058 m × 2.438 m × 0.370 m · 31,260 kg payloadSpecs
- Deck height 370 mm. Folded, up to 7 units interlock into one pile of standard 8'6" height for empty moves.
- Heavier-rated series in the same fleet reach 45,000 kg max gross. ISO code 29P0 per the code table on p. 51.
40' Platform
ISO 49P0Long heavy cargo, with a gooseneck tunnel at both ends. As a foundation base for break bulk the static load can reach 85,000 kg.
12.192 m × 2.245 m × 0.648 m · 44,050 kg payloadSpecs
- Up to 4 folded units interlock into one pile of standard 8'6" height.
- Heavier-rated series in the same fleet reach 60,000 kg max gross. ISO code 49P0 per the code table on p. 51.
Bulk
20' Bulk
ISO 22B0Dry bulk (grain, malt, minerals, plastic granulate) loaded through three roof hatches and discharged by tipping through the door end, usually into a liner bag.
5.854 m × 2.332 m × 2.383 m · 32.5 m³ · 31,040 kg payloadSpecs
- ISO code 22B0 from the Hapag-Lloyd code table (p. 51).
Tank
20' Tank (T11, 24,000 l)
IMO T11Liquids in bulk, hazardous and non-hazardous, including food grade: a stainless steel barrel in a 20' ISO frame.
6.058 m × 2.438 m × 2.591 m · 24,000 l · 32,380 kg payloadSpecs
- Working pressure 4 bar, test pressure 6 bar, 316L stainless shell (lessor fleet average).

11.578 m × 2.280 m × 2.525 m · 66.7 m³ · 29,700 kg payloadSpecs
- Load only up to the red load line (max. stowage height) so air can circulate.
Where other tables disagree
We checked the figures most often copied from the SeaRates container reference (Wayback Machine snapshots, 2024) and the Qubictron container table against the carrier specification. These values differ; the reefer height is about 25 cm too low in both.
