Vincent Thomas Bridge Closure Meets a Record Month at San Pedro Bay

Caltrans closes the Vincent Thomas Bridge to all traffic on 7 November, and its fact sheet puts the work at 16 months. State Route 47 between San Pedro and Terminal Island shuts with the span while crews replace the deck, median, railing, fencing and signage. The Vincent Thomas Bridge closure starts weeks after Los Angeles and Long Beach each had the busiest month in their history.

Eight percent of port drayage traffic uses the bridge, which tells one carrier little

The Port of Los Angeles expects no impact on productivity, flow or capacity at its terminals and lists rail cargo as unaffected, according to its bridge project page. Only 8% of port-complex drayage truck traffic uses the bridge, the same page says, and local detours “may add some extra time for truck drivers.”

The 8% is a figure for the complex.

A carrier that hauls mostly between Terminal Island and San Pedro could sit far above it, and the page gives no split by terminal.

The end date is soft as well. Caltrans expects the bridge to open to traffic in early 2028, after which a final phase removes the temporary features and installs seismic sensors, and the port gives March 2028. Patch reported that the 16-month estimate assumes crews work around the clock.

The detour depends on which side of the harbor the truck comes from

The Los Angeles Times reported on 16 October that Terminal Island traffic will use Front Street and John S. Gibson Boulevard in San Pedro and Harry Bridges Boulevard and Henry Ford Avenue in Wilmington, linked by I-110 and I-710. The Southbound 105 summarises the Caltrans FAQ differently: traffic reaches Terminal Island over the Commodore Schuyler F. Heim Bridge from the north and the Gerald Desmond Bridge from the east. Both lists include Harry Bridges Boulevard and Henry Ford Avenue. Patch had reported on 6 October that Caltrans cautioned final routes could still change.

For a dispatcher the practical difference is the bridge. A truck coming down from the north and one coming in from the east cross different spans, so a single instruction to “use the detour” leaves the route open.

Caltrans aims to push commercial trucks off city streets and onto the freeways. Officers will staff 18 key intersections as required, and local police will expand commercial trucking enforcement.

Long Beach opens evening and Saturday gates for six weeks

Long Beach container terminals will run extra evening and Saturday hours from late October, two weeks before the closure. CEO Noel Hacegaba announced the program at the port’s 15 October briefing, and Railway Age reported that the terminal operators, the ILWU and the Harbor Trucking Association run it with the port. It lasts six weeks and skips Thanksgiving week. Hacegaba said the port “will remain fully open and moving cargo with efficiency during the bridge closure next door.”

Six weeks from late October runs out in December, and nothing published names gate hours for the 16 months of closure that follow.

The 10 January truce deadline falls nine weeks into the closure

Los Angeles handled 1,042,652 TEU in September, more than 20,000 above its previous record, according to the port’s release of 9 October. Long Beach handled 997,177 TEU, 25% more than a year earlier, and Container News reported zero congestion there. The two ports explain it differently: Gene Seroka points to consumer demand, importers replenishing inventories and trouble on the Suez and Panama routes, while Hacegaba points to high diesel costs, Panama Canal access restrictions and progress toward a possible new US-China trade deal.

Los Angeles expects another round of front-loaded cargo before the US-China trade truce expires on 10 January, SupplyChainBrain reported from the 9 October briefing, and before an early Lunar New Year in the first week of February. Seroka said volume “will probably stay a little bit more elevated than normal.”

What to pin down with the drayage carrier before 7 November

The Vincent Thomas Bridge closure lands on the dispatcher first. Ask which terminal each container leaves from and from which side of the harbor the truck arrives, because that decides the bridge. Get both answers in writing, along with the rule for detour time: whether it sits in the rate or is billed later as waiting time.

For Long Beach pickups, book into the evening and Saturday hours while they last and ask the terminal what replaces them. Terminal dwell shows up in the ETA before it shows up on an invoice, and the box’s own events on container tracking tell you when it is available for pickup.
